Prevention of Neurological Diseases: A Task Based on Self-Care

“The prevention of neurological diseases is a difficult task because there are many uncertain hypotheses.”

Our neurology specialist, Dr. Alejandra Guerrero Gómez, offers a series of recommendations to improve the quality of life for people with neurological conditions and to adopt healthy habits.

“A balanced diet makes all the difference when it comes to improving neurological conditions,” says Dr. Guerrero. Fish, milk, fruits, and vegetables provide glutamate, an amino acid that supports the body’s cognitive functions and improves coordination.

“Having restorative sleep, regardless of how long you sleep.” Most people sleep between 6 and 8 hours each night, but there are individuals who sleep only 5 hours or less throughout their lives without it affecting their quality of life.

Why? Sleep, regardless of its duration, must be restorative. “Imagine sleep as the mind’s garbage collector each night; if it manages to clear away the waste from daily mental processes, the person will feel rested,” explains Dr. Guerrero. Therefore, good sleep habits are essential to prevent early-onset neurological diseases.

Good Sleep Habits!

  • Set a consistent bedtime.
  • Use the bed only for sleeping—not for watching TV, eating, studying, working, or reading.
  • Avoid watching exciting movies, playing video games, or feeling anxious just before bed.

Headaches

Headaches are the most common neurological condition. People who experience them usually do so due to hereditary factors. “If my parents had headaches their whole lives, I will likely have them too.”

However, there are circumstances where a person may experience headaches without a hereditary background. To address this condition, our neurologist recommends:

  • Avoid prolonged fasting.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Avoid taking more than 15 painkillers per month.
  • Get adequate sleep.
  • Avoid stressful situations.

Whether or not you have a neurological condition, following these healthy habits will care not only for your brain but for your entire body.
