Oral Hygiene: Beyond Brushing Teeth

From a young age, we were taught to brush the upper teeth downward and the lower teeth upward to prevent gum recession. However, oral hygiene goes beyond that.

Maria Elena Zuluaga, Head of Dentistry at Clínica CES, shares some recommendations beyond brushing to incorporate into our habits for complete oral hygiene and to prevent diseases.

“Using dental floss prevents cavities between teeth, bone and gum loss, and ensures plaque does not build up on the tooth surface,” highlights Dr. Maria Elena.

Why Visit the Dentist?

Despite daily brushing, bacterial plaque accumulates on our teeth due to the cooked foods common in our diets. The dentist can also correct our brushing and flossing techniques and provide a thorough cleaning to remove accumulated tartar.

What Is a Prophylaxis and What Are Its Benefits?

At Clínica CES, prophylaxis is performed using pressurized water and bicarbonate to deeply clean the teeth and leave them feeling smooth. Its purpose is to remove plaque and promote better gum health.

Prophylaxis Helps Prevent Oral Diseases Such As: Cavities, silent diseases like periodontitis and pulp disease, and gingivitis (natural gum inflammation), as well as compensating for insufficient brushing (less than 8 minutes).

Prophylaxis for People with Chronic Illnesses and Pregnant Women

Pregnant women should include two or three prophylaxis sessions in their prenatal plan to prevent gum disease linked to premature births.

Diabetic individuals should have frequent prophylaxis, as diabetes accelerates tooth loss. For heart patients, it is essential as oral bacteria can easily reach the heart.

“Oral hygiene is prevention,” says the Head of Dentistry. Good hygiene reduces the risk of tartar buildup, which can lead to more severe conditions such as nerve pain and tooth loss.
