Hemodynamics and Electrophysiology: Two Subspecialties That Care for the Heart

Hemodynamics and electrophysiology are subspecialties of cardiology.

Hemodynamics is responsible for studying arteries and veins through the insertion of a catheter to check for obstructions, measure pressures, volumes, and areas, observe valve behavior, or detect malfunctions.

Electrophysiology deals with the heart’s electrical system, diagnosing and treating arrhythmias.

“The heart is like a house with four rooms. The muscles are the walls, and communication between them happens through the doors, which are the heart valves. Hemodynamics checks the house’s plumbing, and electrophysiology ensures the electrical system works,” explains Dr. Sebastián Naranjo Restrepo, clinical cardiologist

A Contribution to Quality of Life Through Prevention

Hemodynamics offers a cure for heart attacks and, in cases where studies suggest coronary artery disease, the specialty’s key procedure, catheterization, acts as a preventive solution before an event occurs. In other words, catheterization is not only used after a heart attack or serious issue but also to detect and correct early signs that could lead to one.

When Should You Consult One of These Subspecialties?

According to Dr. Naranjo Restrepo, the most common reason to consult a hemodynamics specialist is angina or a heart attack caused by a blockage in one of the heart’s main arteries. These conditions usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, fainting, shortness of breath, chest pressure triggered by exertion and relieved by rest, excessive sweating, nausea, or unusual exhaustion.

Other conditions involve valves becoming too narrow or enlarged within the heart. Hemodynamics can repair these valves, replace them via catheterization, or use devices to improve valve function when cardiovascular surgery is not an option.

In electrophysiology, people consult for fainting spells caused by heart problems. Additionally, there is bradycardia, which involves a decreased heart rate or, in some cases, the heart pausing for 5 to 7 seconds. In most cases, the patient requires a pacemaker to improve electrical conduction in the heart and enhance their quality of life.

The impact on patients’ well-being from each of these subspecialties is part of the purpose of CES Cardiology, a unit staffed by qualified professionals: physicians, internists, and core cardiologists. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including echocardiography, electrocardiograms, cardiac ultrasounds, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, among others
