Stress and Its Relationship with the Heart

Stress is how the mind and body react to a threat or challenge.

Laura Lopera Mejía, Cardiologist Liaison at Clínica CES, explains how stress events can trigger coronary syndromes:

  • In the first 24 hours following the death of a loved one, the incidence rate of heart attacks increases up to 21 times.
  • During natural disasters, cases of sudden cardiac death can increase, as occurred in the 1994 California earthquake.

There are various theories explaining why stressful events increase cardiovascular risk.
