Hope and science: the treatment that improves the quality of life of patients with refractory epilepsy

Refractory epilepsy represents one of the greatest challenges in the treatment of neurological disorders. It is a condition in which, despite the best pharmacological management, seizures cannot be completely controlled. In response to this, Clínica CES continues to advance with innovative alternatives aimed at improving the quality of life of patients and their families.

One of these treatments is the implantation of a vagus nerve stimulator, a device that offers new hope to those living with this condition. The procedure was recently performed on Salomé, a young girl diagnosed with refractory epilepsy, under the care of an interdisciplinary team at Clínica CES.

“Refractory epilepsy is defined as a condition in which, despite the best pharmacological treatment, seizure control is not achieved. In these cases, we evaluate therapeutic options such as the vagus nerve stimulator, which can bring significant improvement to the quality of life of both the patient and their family,” explained Dr. Juan Fernando Arias, Neurosurgeon and Epilepsy Specialist.

The treatment of refractory epilepsy with a vagus nerve stimulator involves the implantation of a device that sends controlled electrical impulses to the vagus nerve, helping to reduce the frequency and intensity of epileptic seizures. This minimally invasive procedure has become an effective and safe therapeutic option for patients who do not respond adequately to medication.

For Salomé’s mother, this procedure represents a new opportunity filled with faith and optimism.

“I have all my hope set on Salomé getting better, especially in reducing the frequency of her seizures. It’s a situation that never gives you peace of mind, because a seizure can happen at any moment. I’m very happy and confident in the care provided by Clínica CES; I know everything will be a success,” she said emotionally.

With this type of intervention, Clínica CES reaffirms its commitment to the development of medical technologies that transform lives and bring hope.
